O2 ARENA is the largest multipurpose hall in the Czech Republic designed for organizing diverse sports and cultural events. Its unique functionality and above-standard parameters were tested during the Ice-hockey World Chamopinship in Prague staged during April and May 2004. Especially the gastronomic service operated by the Pivovary Staropramen company underwent severe testing and provided more then half million visitors with refreshments of various kinds during the championship. The information system supporting a complete network of restaurants, bars and stands in the O2 ARENA was built and ran by the Hewlett-Packard company as the project general supplier. It was commissioned by the BESTSPORT, a.s. company, the owner of O2 ARENA.
Within the Gastro project, the Hewlett-Packard company supplied O2 ARENA with all hardware equipment and implemented software applications together with a database. The solution comprises Hewlett-Packard servers on HP-UX and Intel platforms as well as 205 cash registers from the Wincor-Nixdorf company, which makes this project the largest installation of this type of cash registers in Europe. The multiuser application software SEPTIM-MU was developed from the standard and wide-spread SEPTIM system by ASW Systems (nearly 800 installations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia), using the SYBASE database with clients running under Linux.
